CantiClever Probes


 
CantiClever Design
The CantiClever type probe has been particularly designed for high resolution imaging of high density magnetic storage media and heads. The shape of the probe has been designed to create the ideal shape for a MFM probe, a long bar magnet with very small diameter. The tip of this probe is formed by a very thin triangular shaped SiN layer, hanging down from the side of the cantilever. By depositing the magnetic coating on the edge of this layer, the bar magnet shape is created.

The bar-magnet structure of the magnetic film results in a very high shape anisotropy. As a result the probe is capable of imaging strong specimen stray-fields without reversal of its magnetization direction. This feature makes the probe very suitable for measurements with external applied magnetic fields.

Hard Magnetic
A range of Smart Coated hard magnetic cobalt based alloy coatings are available. The right choice of probe for your hard magnetic sample depends on the optimal compromise between resolution and signal strength for your applications. The CantiClever yields particular good signal strength at high spatial resolution. Due to its shape signal strength at lower resolution is reduced. Soft Magnetic
Due to the extreme reduction of magnetic volume on the tip, the CantiClever is applicable on soft magnetic samples. Even with a hard magnetic coating on the tip, very limited disturbance of domains in soft magnetic samples is observed. For very sensitive samples and applications where switching of the tip is required, a soft magnetic coating is available.

Other CantiClever applications
SmartTip is now exploring other application areas for the CantiClever probe. Its unique design can yield advantages in many other applications. In scanning capacitance measurements for instance, the CantiClever yields increased resolution and reduced parasitical capacitance.
